Evidence:Not supported

Our verdict: Not recommended as a treatment for hot flashes (Level II).

Acupuncture is commonly recommended as a non-hormonal option for hot flashes, and it's one of the more frequently studied complementary approaches. After reviewing the randomized trial literature in its 2023 Nonhormone Therapy Position Statement, The Menopause Society placed acupuncture in the not recommended category for vasomotor symptoms (Level II).

Why trials haven't supported it

A key issue in acupuncture research is the comparison group: well-designed trials typically compare real acupuncture against sham acupuncture (placement that mimics the experience without targeting the specific traditional points). When studies make that comparison, acupuncture for hot flashes hasn't consistently outperformed the sham version by a meaningful margin.

This doesn't mean acupuncture is unsafe — performed by a licensed practitioner, it's generally low-risk. The verdict is specifically about whether it's an effective treatment for reducing hot flash frequency or severity, and the trial evidence doesn't support that.

Questions people ask

Does acupuncture work for hot flashes?

According to The Menopause Society's 2023 review of randomized trial evidence, acupuncture is classified as not recommended for vasomotor symptoms (Level II) — trials have not shown it to be reliably more effective than sham or placebo acupuncture for reducing hot flash frequency or severity.

Is acupuncture risky to try anyway?

Acupuncture performed by a licensed practitioner is generally low-risk. The verdict here is about effectiveness specifically for hot flashes, not about safety — it just shouldn't be relied on as your primary treatment if hot flashes are significantly disrupting your life.
