Evidence:Strong evidence

This page may not apply to you if:

  • Contraindicated in people with known cirrhosis, severe renal impairment or end-stage renal disease, or taking CYP1A2 inhibitors

Veozah (fezolinetant) is an FDA-approved, non-hormonal prescription medication for moderate-to-severe hot flashes and night sweats due to menopause, supported by Level I evidence in The Menopause Society's 2023 Nonhormone Therapy Position Statement.

How fezolinetant works without hormones

During menopause, declining estrogen causes neurokinin B (NKB) signaling on KNDy neurons in the brain's thermoregulatory center (hypothalamus) to become overactive, triggering hot flashes. Fezolinetant blocks the neurokinin 3 (NK3) receptor directly rather than replacing estrogen. Compare it with the dual NK1/NK3 blocker in Lynkuet (elinzanetant) and other non-hormonal treatments for hot flashes.

FDA boxed warning: liver blood test schedule and contraindications

According to the FDA label, Veozah is contraindicated if you have known cirrhosis, severe kidney impairment or end-stage renal disease, or if you take medications that are CYP1A2 inhibitors.

Questions to take to your clinician

Add these prompts to your printable sheet in the treatment conversation builder or compare non-prescription options in our Does It Work? directory:

  • Do any of my current medications inhibit CYP1A2 or interact with fezolinetant?
  • How will we schedule my baseline, 1-month, 2-month, 3-month, 6-month, and 9-month liver function blood tests?
  • How does Veozah compare with other Level I non-hormonal options (such as SSRIs/SNRIs, gabapentin, or elinzanetant) for my health history?

Questions people ask

Is Veozah a hormone?

No. Veozah (fezolinetant) is a non-hormonal neurokinin 3 (NK3) receptor antagonist that targets temperature-regulating neurons in the hypothalamus without estrogen or progestogen activity.

What blood tests are required when taking Veozah?

Under the FDA prescribing label, a clinician must check blood liver tests (hepatic transaminases and total bilirubin) before you start Veozah, every month for the first 3 months, and then at months 6 and 9.
